Matzah Holder

Everyone in the family can help prepare for Passover! Make several handmade Matzah Holders to give as gifts.

1. Fold white construction paper in half. Spread the paper open, with the outside of the fold facing up.

2. Cover your art area with newspaper. Lay a coffee filter flat. Using Crayola® Washable Markers, fill the coffee filter with bright colors. Spritz the filter with water.

3. While the filter is still wet, lay it on one side of the folded construction paper. Press gently on the filter to transfer the colors. Wrinkles in the filter will add to the texture and design! Carefully remove and discard the filter. Let the construction paper design dry.

4. Re-fold the construction paper. Punch holes evenly around three sides of your Matzah Holder, including the folded side. Leave the top open.

5. Lace colorful yarn through the holes and knot both ends to complete.

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

String-Like Materials—Includes string, raffia, lacing, yarn, ribbon, and other similar material. Children 3 years and younger should not be given any string-like material that is longer than 12 inches. Close adult supervision is essential whenever children use string-like material. When crafts are to be worn around the necks of children 8 years and younger, attach the ends of the “string-like material” with clear adhesive tape, which allows easy release of the bond if the craft becomes entangled or caught on equipment. For children older than 8 years, the ends of the “string-like material” may be tied and knotted.

Passover is an 8-day Jewish holiday during which Jews celebrate their freedom from slavery in Egypt. Matzah, which is unleavened bread, is eaten at the Seder, a festive Passover dinner. Three pieces of matzah are placed inside the holder.
