Holiday Glow Cards

Why

Introduce children to different cultural traditions and varied art techniques while creating cards that celebrate the joy and light of the season.

Steps

1. For the print: Cut a card-sized piece of construction paper with Crayola® Scissors. With a plastic knife or craft stick, carve the words Holiday Glow or some other message backwards into a foam produce tray to make a printing plate. Draw designs around the words.

2. Spread newspaper over your work area. Pour Crayola Washable Kid's Paint into another foam produce tray. Dip a clean sponge in the paint and apply it to your carved holiday message. Cut a card-sized piece of construction paper with Crayola Scissors.

3. Place the paper on top of the Holiday Glow carving and press straight down with your hands to print. Set it aside to dry. To make the card: Fold another piece of card-sized construction paper lengthwise in half. Cut two slits in the middle, on the fold, which will make a "chair" when the card is opened.

4. On another small piece of construction paper, draw one or more candles with Crayola Washable Markers. Color the candles and cut them out all in one piece. Fold back the bottom of the candle to form a base. Glue the candle "on the chair" inside the card with Crayola School Glue. Dry.

5. Write a message and design the inside of your card. Staple the dry Holiday Glow print to the front of the card.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Crayola Washable Paints—Not for use as body/face paint.

Modeling Tools—Use the least dangerous point or edge sufficient to do the job. For example, craft sticks, plastic knives and forks, and cookie cutters can cut or carve modeling materials.

Recycled Foam Produce Trays—Wash in hot, soapy water. No meat or poultry trays should be used.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

Sponges and Foam—Sponges, foam, and other expandable materials should not be used with children 3 years old and younger.
